Hour of 13

Hour of 13 play a hard ruling mix of traditional doom and NWOBHM (with a few stoner riffs and some straight up evil guitar harmonies) that I've been obsessing over for a minute. Mercyful Fate + Pentagram + Witchfinder General? I don't know. Make no mistake however, this is no throwback attempt to simply ape thee gods of the genre...the jams sound fresh while still maintaining that old school feel. This album is dark, malevolent and occult as fuck. The lyrical themes deal mostly with devil worship, blasphemy and apocalyptic sorcery- "With sacred blades I mutilate. To my own wounds I masturbate." No "true doom" guilty christian lyrics or hippie shit here, folks. Vocalist Phil Swanson (who has been since replaced by Robb Pritchard) gives a truly inspired performance. His haunting vocals are hypnotic and mournful, yet menacing.
According to their myspace, a complete lineup has been finalized, so here's hoping to see these guys live sometime soon.

So, it has been a while since my last post, but I'm back and will try and stay "regular" for all of my devoted followers out there (haha). I'm kicking off my return by sharing an album that changed my life and never ceases to inspire me. That album is Fifteen Counts of Arson by His Hero is Gone. I'm not even going to bother typing any further. My words could never do justice to this ugly motherfucker. If you don't know, now you know...

Carl from Left Hand Path turned me on to this Ukrainian black metal outfit.
I haven't heard any of their other albums, but this one is really great. Melancholy, but driving, with HEAVY METAL guitar solos and a liberal amount of traditional Ukrainian folk music in the mix. I don't know, it's epic, just check it out.

Out of print (i think?) gem on roadrunner records (really?). Dirty, sludgy drug metal with lots of samples.
EYEHATEGOD comparisons abound, but these dudes like to pick up the pace more often, play really slow pick scrapes and have more of a chaotic Unsane feel.
